TikTok app demo video: specs, safe zones and a mockup format

TikTok specs (9:16, 1080×1920, MP4/MOV) plus the safe-zone layout and a fast device-mockup format that reads as native, not as an ad.

Published September 4, 2026

TikTok punishes anything that looks like an ad and rewards anything that looks like a person showing you something. A slick 3D device video can go either way — the difference is pacing and framing. Fast cuts, a device that moves on the beat, a screen recording that actually does something in the first second, and text that talks like a caption rather than a headline.

TikTok video specs (September 2026)

Aspect ratio 9:16 (1080 × 1920)
Resolution 1080 × 1920 recommended (720 × 1280 minimum)
Length Long uploads are allowed; demos perform at 9–21 seconds
Format MP4 or MOV (H.264/AAC); WebM accepted on some surfaces
Frame rate 30 fps standard; 60 fps accepted
Safe zone Keep content out of the right ~15% (buttons) and bottom ~25% (caption, sound) of the frame

TikTok's overlays are heavier than Instagram's: a column of buttons down the right edge and a caption block across the bottom. Compose the device left of centre and keep hook text in the upper third.

The export settings that fit TikTok

Export 1080 × 1920 at 30 fps (60 if the screen recording has fast scrolling). Place the phone slightly left of centre with hook text above it, nothing in the bottom quarter or right edge. Two or three shots of 3–7 seconds each beat one long shot; TikTok viewers expect cuts. Motion blur low; keep effects minimal — grain and vignette read as "produced".

Making it in OpenMock

  1. Open OpenMock in a desktop browser and set the canvas ratio to 9:16 in the top bar.
  2. Pick a device (or the frameless screen) and drop your screenshot or screen recording onto it.
  3. Build three short shots (5 s, 6 s, 4 s) with a quick roll between them; drop your audio on the timeline and align the cuts.
  4. Add a text shot for the hook and a logo shot at the end if you want a branded close; both are shots on the same timeline.
  5. Export video with the 9:16 — 1080×1920 (1080p) preset. Free exports are 720p/30 fps with a watermark; Pro gives you the full-resolution, watermark-free file.

FAQ

What aspect ratio should a TikTok product video be?

9:16 at 1080 × 1920. TikTok is full-screen vertical; horizontal video is letterboxed and rarely performs.

How long should a TikTok app demo be?

Nine to twenty-one seconds for a demo. TikTok allows much longer uploads, but a product clip should make its point in under 20 seconds and loop cleanly.

Does a 3D mockup look too polished for TikTok?

It can. Counter it with pacing (short cuts on the beat), caption-style text, a colourful standard iPhone rather than a Pro in black, and minimal effects. The mockup is there to make the recording legible, not to look like a commercial.
